Fall Clean Up
With the cooler fall weather
upon us, now is the perfect time for some fall cleaning of your African violet
collection. Take a critical look at your plants. After a hot
summer, plants may not be looking their best. Decide which plants need
just little TLC, which may need more drastic measures and which should be
thrown out or started over.
- Pull
off any leaves that are yellowed, limp, marred or undersized
- Re-pot
tired looking plants in fresh potting mix
- Plants
with long necks should be planted deeper in their pots or rejuvenated by
cutting of the root ball. Call us at 508-532-1300 and we'll tell you
how
- Give
plants a nice bath with warm water - spray leaves with warm water mixed
with a drop of dish soap. Rub leaves gently. Hold plant at a
45 degree angle over the sink and rinse with a spray of warm water.
Pat center dry and let plant dry out of direct light
- Clean
and disinfect the shelves in your growing area
- Think
about setting up a humidifier or pebble trays when the heat comes on and
humidity drops
- Reduce
your collection - if a certain plant does not grow well for you or give
you joy, it's time to throw it out.
Happy Growing,
Sharon
